Top 5 Holiday Hangover Remedies
If you got caught up in the holiday spirit and you are currently paying the price, here are a few hacks to help you feel better and prevent the dreaded hangover in the first place.
do not drink on an empty stomach
I think we all learned this the wrong way at some point in our lives (I’m looking at you college sorority years.) But even as wisened adults we tend to forget to eat or we eat the “party food” which is laden with carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. You must consume protein and a healthy fat to slow the absorption of alcohol. I highly recommendeating a light balanced meal before heading out for the night.
don’t drink the pretty “foofy” drink
I do believe “foofy” is the technical term! In all seriousness, beer and sugary cocktails spike your blood sugar levels and leave your body trying to play catch-up. Combine that with lack of sleep, dehydration, a solid dose of holiday stress and you are set up for disaster.
Mixers are sugary and tend to be full of crappola! Avoid those and use lime or lemon juice. Opting for the light beer because you think it’s low in calories can also be a mistake. The carbohydrate load on your stomach is sure to spike your blood sugar.
do drink vodka, gin, tequila and even dry wines
Try to look for quality brands with clean sourcing for their ingredients. Tito’s brand vodka is a great option. Casa Nobles tequila has an organic option. And Dry Farm Wines are changing the wine industry for the better. Bourbon, Rum and Whiskey, you can sit this one out.
do take supplements
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is used to combat oxidative stress. It can help stabilize your blood sugar as well. Do take this before and after you consume alcohol. You can also take this with vitamin C if you have some on hand. This helps potentiate the NAC so it can best perform within your body.
Glutathione is a “master antioxidant” and is powerful for detoxification and immune support. You’ll want to take this after drinking. I recommend taking it once you get back home with a glass of water. I personally use this one from Bulletproof.
Replace electrolytes lost by consuming alcohol. Some key electrolytes to replace are Vitamin C and Magnesium. I use a simple Magnesium spray. You can purchase the one I use from Ancient Minerals HERE.
hydrate. hydrate. hydrate.
The number one contributor to the malaise you feel from drinking is dehydration. Hydrate before, during and after you consume alcohol. If you feel like you’re going to float away on a cloud of water, I’ve got a few tasty options to hydrate and add more micronutrients back into your system.
My first recommendation is a cold-pressed green juice. I love the one from The Weekly Juicery. Secondarily, squeeze some citrus into your filtered water. This cold weather is perfect for juicy lemons and limes.
