Intermittent Fasting How To and FAQs

 In Blog

Not too long ago, I began to research and practice intermittent fasting. As I have begun to share what I believe to be the countless benefits of IF, I am regularly met with questions about implementing this strategy into everyday life.

So, I’ve decided to put together a list of questions I am frequently asked regarding the implementation of Intermittent Fasting.

What do I eat to break my fast?

Intermittent fasting is not a diet, but an eating schedule. When breaking your fast each day, it doesn’t matter if you do a big breakfast-like meal or go straight to lunch. What does matter is that you eat whole foods that are full of the vital nutrients you need. So, whether it’s eggs and bacon or a Cobb salad, break your fast with whole foods that will flood your body with macro and micronutrients.

What do I do if I can’t make it until noon?

I always recommend starting your fast at 12-14 hours per day and working your way up to 16 hours. When you are struggling to push through your fasting window, grab some tea, water, BCAA’s or fresh pressed juice. These will help you satisfy your body’s need to taste something, without forcing your body out of digestive rest.

Why do you advocate for a 16/8 fasting cycle?

There are several different intermittent fasting protocols available, but the one I recommend is a daily 16/8 protocol. This simply means that you fast for 16 hours each day, and eat all of your calories within the other 8 hours. The reason this is effective, is because it is sustainable, simple and flexible. In addition, our bodies are not designed for a constant influx of calories. Giving it daily rest periods: optimizes hormonal output, regulates blood sugar and improves digestion.

Will IF help me lose weight?

If you have weight to lose, it absolutely can! However, intermittent fasting is not another form of a low calorie diet. Instead, the digestive rest, blood sugar regulation and optimized hormonal output turn your body into an effective fat burner. Pairing this strategy with a whole foods based diet can not only help you lose weight but will do wonders for your energy levels.

What are the benefits of Intermittent Fasting?

The benefits of intermittent fasting are extensive. However, the most common benefits are: higher productivity, less stress surrounding food, more energy, better sleep, fat loss, and better digestion. Dialing in an effective nutritional strategy like intermittent fasting will get you some incredible results, even if you don’t have the time to work out often.
